24 November 2008 188 Comments

Note : If you are planning on using Gevey SIM, please take a quick peek at this marathon race into chasing the mystery behind Pwned iPhone 3G 2.2 and Gevey SIM issues.

This custom pwned firmware version 2.2 has the older Baseband, Factory default logos (No Pwnapple at boot!) , Pre-activated for non-ATT users, Root Partition size 1000 MB, Cydia and Installer as a bonus to make life simple!

Recommended Steps :

Pwn your iPhone 3G when at firmware version 2.1 using QuickPwn 2.2 either using Windows or Mac(STRICTLY REQUIRED)

Now, download this Custom Firmware v2.2 using the following Rapidshare links (totalling 236.6 MB, use HJSplit to Join these files)

iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw.001

iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw.002

iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw.003

The following ipsw is with 533 MB root partition (DeFacto as it is termed by Johnny)!

No boot logos (standard apple logo)
533mb root partition
No baseband upgrade
cydia,installer
Activated for T-mobile
You Tube activated

iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.001

iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.002

iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.003

Use iTunes v8.0.2 on either Windows or Macs (Late 2008 Macbooks included) and hold the Shift (Windows) / Option (Mac) buttons and browse to the .ipsw you just downloaded (and joined) and let iTunes do the rest!

You should now have iPhone 2.2 firmware with all the new features and the best of Open Source offerings (Cydia and its wonderful applications which Apple may never approve in the near future!).

Hi Kiran, you seem to be a great help, hopefully you can help me. If you want you can email me….

I currently use Tmobile, on a normal razr phone. I bought this with the intention of buying, jailbreaking, and unlocking an iPhone3G at 2.2 fw.
Ok so when I buy and unbox my iPhone, what must I do first?
Go straight to pwning it with QPWN 2.2? Do I insert my Tmobile SIM first? And doesnt QPWN 2.2 upgarde the baseband? If it comes with 2.2 fw I guess Im just screwed. When can I actually sync with itunes?

As you can see Im thoroughly lost :/ Ive been researching all of this for the past 2 weeks or so. I just MUST know exactly what Im doing before I do so.
Maybe you could write an unboxing, jailbreaking, and unclocking for dummies/noobs :]
    please and SO much thanks!

If anyone would like to reply to this, thatd be great: DaPrototype14@aol.com

To anyone who has a TurboSim (I assume you mean the little SIM card you use in conjunction with the actual SIM of your carrier)…

This is what I plan to use. How do you like yours? Does it work well?
    And where’d you buy it?

Once again anyhelp would be greatly appreciated!

chuklee : First, you have to download firmware 2.1 from downloads section. Then restore to 2.1 using iTunes (make sure you hold Shift/Option keys while clicking Restore button). Now use quickpwn from Downloads section and jailbreak it.

Now, download the firmware 2.2 from this post and use iTunes to restore to 2.2…

Remus : Will write one when I get some more time. Follow my instructions above, you should be all set. Before buying on eBay, you should ask the seller about baseband version.

Gevey SIM can be bought online (on eBay). I can ship one tomorrow if you paypal me $20 today. (If you are in US that is)!

I have tried restoring my iphone to Ver 2.1 and after it goes through the restoration process and verifies the software I get an unknown error and it states that the iphone can not be restored. Any ideas?

  • natural01 said:

    Unknown error (1013)

  • kiran said:

Error 1013 is a known error, but it actually restored to 2.1! Check your iPhone firmware, it must be 2.1….

  • natural01 said:

Whenever I try to restore to 2.1 and it gives me the message the iphone remains in Recovery mode (whatever you refer to the screen that displays the itunes logo and USB) so even if I wanted to I couldnt check the Version. I have to restore it afterwards to 2.2 just to make it function again. I notice that when the 2.2 restore is being conducted a progress bar appears underneath the Apple logo, while the 2.1 restore only has a spiral at the bottom of the screen.

    greetings

i have an 8gb 3g iphone running on 2.1 i wanted to upgrade using the custom ipsw whiich i downloaded from rapidshare. however, after using hj split only file 01 and 02 were joined. how is it.

another is that when i tried updating through i tune (folllowing the instructions herein) i got an error 1403 or 1413. (i used quickpwn 2.2 by the way to jailbreak my iphone).

  • kiran said:

I am confused. Are you trying to preserve the baseband? Download all 3 files and hjsplit should join them, never had a problem with that.

Use quickpwn at 2.1 and then use this firmware to restore from iTunes…

    hi kiran:
you have not answered my question in #110.. Is it related to the firmware or hardware..
    thank you

  • kiran said:

Elba : It shouldn’t be hardware problem since you can see dfu screen. Try plugging it in dfu screen to the computer and leave it such for few hours. Unplug and try powering on, hopefully you should see apple logo. You don’t have to worry at all, Apple will replace the device no matter what…

    thank you kiran:

hello Kiran how do you do?
I successfully updated to 2.2 firmware without baseband update.
I really appreciate your hard working
this posting is exactly what I was looking for
    I have one question
what if I want to restore again??
do I need to downgrade to 2.1 and jailbrake with quickqwn 2.2 and then restore with your custom 2.2 firmware ??

  • kiran said:

elba : hmmm, not that I think of but I would fool around the DFU mode. I never had a problem with whatever firmware I had till date unless you have a hardware issue (like broken home button or power button)…

dasung : To restore again, just use the custom firmware downloaded here! No need to downgrade again and again!
