iPhone 3G 2.2 Firmware Sim Unlock (Gevey SIM, Turbo SIM) Experiences
Update : Dev Team confirmed the release date for Software Unlock. Please steer away from x-sim unlock techniques. 2.11.07 is the best baseband for now. 2.28 baseband users : solution pending.
Apple’s iPhone 2.2 Firmware certainly sports some cool new features but is it worth taking the risk and updating given the fact that it disrupts the ONLY available unlocking technique ( Sim Unlock ) ?
I have some iPhone 3G’s (bought from Canada) at my disposal and I first updated one of my iPhone 3Gs directly to firmware version 2.2 since I have an ATT account and it clearly breaks the Gevey SIM unlock hack due to Apple sneaking in a Baseband update with the new firmware release.
Take two, with iPhone Devs taking time off over the weekend to release Jailbreak techniques for the newly released firmware v2.2 , I Pwned one of my other iPhone 3G’s with QuickPwn when at firmware version 2.1 and then used Pwnage tool 2.2 to create this Custom Firmware v2.2 without the baseband update. Technically Gevey SIM should survive this update and while it did survive, I have been experiencing some flaky service issues. Not sure if it is with the Gevey SIM (I have more, so I can try with another Gevey SIM).
The power user I am, I should be able to narrow down the cause of an otherwise fantastic interim unlock for iPhone 3G v2.2 till iPhone Devs post a software unlock (hopefully SOON)!
Status : Please hold your horses and WAIT if you are relying on Gevey SIM for unlocking your iPhone 3G. This post will act as a placeholder for Gevey SIM and iPhone 3G, hence it will be frequently updated.
Interim Status :
EDGE and 3G Data works just fine
3G signal not the best, EDGE best
No Voice issues so far
iTunes Sync works just fine

My gevey died a few days ago, i did not update to 2.2, only synced with iTunes 8.02
I already tried that. The phone connects to mobile operator then disconnects giving no service, then connect again to the mobile operator then disconnects giving no service again. I am using Gevey-3G. I restored again to 2.1 and quickpwn it. Now, it is working again.
Adomas : yeah, Gevey SIMs are not being consistent!
OmaricO : Good for you! My Gevey is showing no service issues and drop signals even though I downgraded to 2.1! May be you can help me!

Guilherme : I am sorry to say that we have no other option to wait and anticipate a baseband downgrade. Best bet is to exchange the device witha legit iPhone user.

I am sorry to hear that 🙁 Firmware updates have always been troublesome and this time it ain’t different. Let us hope there will be a fix soon….
Thank you for your attention and even just out of curiosity you also been undermined? let’s wait until the middle of December to see if we have news
Thx aGAIN
Well, I took the plunge since I have an iPhone plan already. Was testing the new firmware! Hopefully there will be a solution soon!
So, is there a possibility that the iPhone 3G 2.2 can be used with any GSM carrier again?
Nic : Not unless you properly pwn and upgrade to 2.2 without upgrading baseband…(you then have to resort to sim unlock for now)…
i’m using a gevey sim with tmobile firmware 2.1 right now and I want to upgrade to 2.2 with your custom firmware will it have it huge problems?
Should I try the downgrade process; from 2.1 to 2.2?
HI, This weekend i will find out if my 3G will work. I have a friend that knows how to fix the Turbo Sim For the new update for 2.2 so i will see if this is true and let you all know.
Please do.. thanks.
vsnfsn : Carefully upgrade to the pwned firmware by first pwning using QuickPwn at 2.1 and then downloading the custom firmware here….
JANAN : No baseband downgrade available yet for 3G iPhones…
thanks, works great
Just used Pwnage tool to upgrade from jailbroken 2.1 –> jailbroken 2.2 (preserving baseband) but it broke my Gevey SIM hack! Will try to downgrade/reupgrade and see what happens…
Nevermind — All I had to do was restart the iPhone 3G and now its working using Gevey SIM! Sweet.
I have 2 iPhones on hands, and my older 8GB 3G one, had 2.2 oficial update… so, what i need to do for downgrande 2.2 (oficial) to 2.1 custom for undone the baseband not preserved?! (this is possible?) So i had a Gevey SIM 3G and it not working on both my 3G iPhones…the old one had a 2.2 (oficial) update) and the new one, had yet a 2.1 (oficial) release, but Gevey SIM is not wokting too….
As long as you have the old baseband, it should work. Give me the baseband info for further help…
how do i downgrade from 2.2 version on iphone 3g i have tmobile and it has been locked. i dont know how to unlock it or get it to work. does anyone kno?
