Jailbreak, Unlock, Activate iPhone 3.0.1 Firmware Released for 2G, 3G, 3GS iPhones

31 July 2009 47 Comments

UPDATE : Since iPhone 3.0.1 is a minor upgrade, it is still jailbreakable and unlockable. Please stay away from 3.1 firmware when released, it can be a disaster otherwise!

All you have to do is :

1) Update your iPhone to 3.0.1 firmware via iTunes

2) Use redsn0w to jailbreak. While using redsn0w – when prompted to choose the firmware, simply choose 3.0 firmware instead of 3.0.1 firmware and it should work just fine! This works with iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS.

3) Enjoy your iPhone!

As usual, stay away from the update for a day or two while the firmware is properly patched for jailbreaking and unlocking. Baseband is not updated, meaning unlock still works. Jailbreak supposedly works too but until further confirmation, stay away from the iPhone 3.0.1 update.

This update patches a critical SMS bug which supposedly can break networks, hijack your iPhone and end the world!!

What about the new version of iTunes (8.2.1)? How will it – if at all – affect jailbroken/unlocked iPhones?

  • tim said:

Apparently 3.0.1 can be updated with existing JB. If you would be so kind as to release the firmwares kkiran 🙂

pwnage tool cannot be used with 3.0.1 firmware yet 🙁 No custom ipsw for now but redsn0w should be quick and easy…

I just jailbroke and unlocked iPhone 3GS on 3.0.1 with redsn0w 0.8 I personally spent about 2 days on and off working on this. The only reason it took so long is because I couldn't figure out if this phone was 3G or 3GS (I was given this phone a little FYI) I kept getting Error messages on iTunes that iTunes could not restore iPhone because firmware is not compatible trying to Shift+Restore. I just gave up and updated and restored iPhone to 3.0.1 using iTunes automatic service and had to download the iPhone firmware from your site iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw and use it on redsn0w and it worked fantastically. Oh and btw, I used iTunes ver. 8.2.1.6 I think its the most recent version.

  • kkiran said:

Hey! You should have asked me here! Would have saved you 2 days 😉 Yep, recent iTunes works great and interesting : 3GS will have 3GS on the back panel right?

  • marc said:

i updated my iPhone to 3.0.1 and iTunes v8.2.1.6 also but when runnung purplera1n it hang at the done, Wait for reboot. Any suggestion to resolve? thks

  • amar said:

Don't use purplera1n it hung for me too on that part. Just use redsn0w 0.8 like I did and it worked great, make sure you select 3.0 firmware ipsw file though thats the only way it will work. Also, make sure you get the right precise firmware iPhone2,1 for iPhone 3GS and iPhone1,2 for iPhone 3G…..

Help. I read a ton of posts describing the same problem i'm having. I try what was suggested in those forums. As they see to work for people I am not having any luck. I have an Iphone 3G, firmware 3.0 version 7a400, baseband 04.05.04, Itunes 8.2.1. I try to jailbreak it using RedSnow 8.0 along with firmware Restore 2,1 3.0 7a341. When Redsnow is complete and I hit finish my phone stays on a blue screen. I wait and wait and nothing happens. Did I overlook something? I don't know if anyone can help me, it seems like I did everything right. Thank you for your time!

  • heav09 said:

I actually do have 3.0.1 sorry

  • kkiran said:

Ok. So what do you see on your iPhone's screen at the moment? What did redsn0w say – success?

  • heav09 said:

Well, redsnow will go through the whole process till the end where it says finish…i click finish nothing happens my phone just shows that dark blue luminated screen and it does nothing..please help i feel like i'm close but what is it? lol

  • heav09 said:

just goes through the updating kernal, reboot etc then it says done……my phone just has a blue luminated screen. It does nothing.

  • heav09 said:

Yes I do that then the phone turns back on and I check for cydia and not in there :-(. I tried looking for the newer 3.0.1 but didnt find it

  • heav09 said:

I have been at this for a couple of days now ha

  • heav09 said:

Do you think it has something to do with the 7a400 thing or baseband being 04.05.04??

  • kkiran said:

7a400? It got nothing to do with the baseband.

  • heav09 said:

I would try everything a couple of times. Everytime it's the same thing after it says its updating kernal and rebooting then its done i click finish and my phone stays blue…so i'll just turn on my phone and it will load up like normal…..i would check for cydia to see if maybe it worked but dont see cydia.

  • kkiran said:

And you are sure that you selected Cydia in redsn0w right? Try checking both Icy and Cydia and lets see if it works…

  • heav09 said:

I thought you weren't supposed to select Icy? So I can select Icy then?

  • heav09 said:

I click red snow, i choose 2,1 7a341, it finds the firmware i click next says to unplug usb from my phone and then turn it off wait till completely off then press on home button while you put back in the usb , apple dissapears then u see the itunes icon with the usb i'm still holding it, i hear that sound two times cause i continue holding it then i let go the home button then redsnow says its rebooting…….blue screen stays on, i even didnt click finish right away ..still no progress.

  • kkiran said:

Wait, at this point quickly unplug the USB cable and plug it back in…

  • heav09 said:

so when redsnow is all done I do it then? I unplug then plug…is that what you meant?

  • kkiran said:

Na, that works only when redsn0w is stuck at waiting for reboot message… If it is all done, then issue lies somewhere else…
What os – xp or vista? 32 bit or 64?

hmm well i would have to see how it comes out if you would be able to see it. It's just a dark blue screen luminated like imagine the jail break screen but minus the jailbreak icon thats how it kind of looks like. Wow i must have a major issue. Cause It sounds like you really know ur stuff? Do you think I should just try ICY for my last try…would that mess anything up though?

  • kkiran said:

It won't mess anything up, try icy…

Hello, first of all thank you for your awesome articles.
Second of all, i was wondering if you could help me :-).
I bought my iphone overseas, so had to have it jailbroken and unlocked. It wasn't me doing it, so i have no idea how to do it. Well, at least until i came across your blog.
This is what happened yesterday. I was just reading facebook and the phone froze, so i wanted to restart it and pressed the off and the home button, which normally works, but this time i got the "connect to itunes" screen and i'm stuck.
What would you suggest i do? Should i restore it through itunes, then jailbreak it and then ulocked it? Do i understand it right? What about my data, that stupid me never backed up :-). Thank you so much for your help, I really hope u can help me. Thank you. Zuzana.

oh and i have the iphone 3G, i'm pretty sure it's 2.1.1 version, but not 100% sure. 90% sure :-). And i'm using XP. thanks again.

  • kkiran said:

Hi! So sorry to hear that. So you never synced your iPhone with iTunes before? Do you see the contacts on your pc (outlook …)?

First thing I would like to know is – do you just see the iTunes cable on the screen or do you also see slide to unlock which is highly unlikely…

Please follow my – how to get out of recovery / dfu mode guide http://ilikemyiphone.com/wordpress/2009/07/04/how-to-ge… That way we can get the data backedup… Afterwhich we can upgrade, jailbreak, unlock!

thank you very much for a quick reply, u're a star. Well, yes , i never synced my iphone with iTunes :-). I know i know, very stupid. I got most of my videos and some photos. Did that through ssh.

Only see the cable, can't slide to unlock at all.

So should i go ahead with your how to get out of recovery guide?

thank you very much again for your help.

  • kkiran said:

Yep, follow the guide to get out of recovery mode…

Using ssh, you may get SMS and contacts out too!

i forgot to mention that i did that few months ago :-). Tried it now, but don't know the ip address of my phone. Sorry for not making myself clear. I'll go and do the recovery now and we'll take it from there. Thanks heaps.

  • kkiran said:

Hmmm, well to use SSH, we should make sure your iPhone is connected to WiFi which is clearly not the case at the moment.

Did the videos help you at all with getting out of recovery mode?

  • Zuzana said:

hello again. I followed all the steps in the video, but it still goes back to the "connect to itunes" screen. Any suggestions? 🙁 Thank you. Tried it 3 times.

  • Zuzana said:

by the way, i never get to see the slide to turn off the phone. How do i make sure it is actually turned off, not just sleeping. And why don't i get the slide? Sorry if my questions are dumb :-).

  • Zuzana said:

when i click on your link it says nothing found. I'll try looking it up.

  • Zuzana said:

i push it and hold it and it just goes black. Without a slide. If i keep holding it, nothing happens anymore.

I will try what you just suggested and will let you know how i go. Will do it tomorrow, of to bed now, it's late here in australia. Thank you

  • Zuzana said:

hello again. :-). I tried th quickpwn and when i get to the first screen (detecting iphone), I get the "quickpwn has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience" error message :-(.

With iRecovery i get this message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect". I installed libusb too.

    This is so frustrating 🙁

  • kkiran said:

So sorry to hear that. QuickPwn 2.2.5 : You might have to right click it and run as administrator if on Vista. On XP, it should work fine, not sure what OS you are on.

iRecovery may well be the last resort to get the data failing which we have to restore which is the ultimate last step.
