iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS users can now safely update to 3.1.2 firmware without updating the baseband (for unlock). If you are not the one to download all the various files and just want the ultimate result, these files are waiting for you to download! If you rather want to start from scratch, download Pwnage 3.1.4 tool for Mac.
- Caution #1 : A restore is going to wipe the iPhone clean. Hence, please backup your iPhone using iTunes and then proceed.

Step 2) Join the downloaded files
- The files downloaded above have an extension .001 and .002. They need a special opensource (free) software HJSplit to join.
- Download HJSplit to join both the files – Link for Windows Computers here and Macs here.
Step 3) Restore the firmware in iTunes 9.x
- You should now have the respective firmware file with an extension .ipsw (make sure it is .ipsw or else, it will give you an invalid firmware error) . Follow the steps in order :
- 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.
- 2)If your iPhone is already jailbroken (if you see Cydia on your iPhone!), put your device in Restore mode (Turn iPhone off, keep holding Home button while you plug it in to your computer). Proceed to step 7. If not jailbroken already, continue to the next step (3).
- 3)If you are aware of DFU mode, proceed further. If not, watch this quick video and pay close attention to the steps to achieve DFU mode.
- 4)Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds.
- 5)After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
- 6)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).
- 7)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.
- 8)For a Mac : Hold Option key and then hit Restore button.
- 9)For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.
- 10)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file (the .ipsw file that you downloaded and joined using hjsplit in step 1.x).
Step 4) Give it few minutes to perform the restore. Once the iPhone is up and running, proceed for software Unlock using Cydia. Follow this guide to install Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS. iPhone 2G is already unlocked with this custom firmware!

Experiencing issues, My iPhone (3g 16gb 3.1.2 and 5.11) is jailbroken with blackra1n and unlocked with blacksnow and I'm using Orange as a carrier within the UK.
WIFI works fine and so do calls until I loose a signal, then I have to insert my SIM into my old phone and then back into my iPhone and boom! A full signal and operational until I loose a signal.
I've just returned from Amsterdam where I used my Orange UK SIM and iPhone connected to a Dutch carrier experiencing no problems at all even when I lost signal.
Why is/would this happen?

Ok, this worked for me and I upgraded the firmware on my 3g from 2.2.1 to 3.1.2. However, when my phone rebooted and connected to itunes, I was no longer able to access my itunes account and the email address shown on top of the itunes window was liam_connor2292@photographer.net. I was no longer able to update any of my apps from itunes. I recreated my itunes account and tried it but it gave me an error saying that I needed to login to the liam account to update the apps. I sent an email to Apple tech support and they told me that the apps are registered to the liam account and I need to use it to update them. That is certainly not the case. Can someone please tell me how I can fix this issue? Thanks!

Before I restored the custom ipsw from here, all my apps in itunes synced to the only account I have ever had with itunes. It was only after I restored the custom ipsw through itunes that this problem began and itunes showed my ID as this new liam_ one. So this has to have something to do with the custom ipsw. Is there some ID that is stored in the firmware?

I have an iPhone 3GS 16GB, FW 3.1.2 with 5.11.07. Have been trying for most of the day to unlock the phone. Managed to jailbreak with no problems whatsoever using blackra1n. When I put my T-mobile (UK) sim in the phone, the T-mobile logo comes up fine at the top and I even have three to five bars of reception but whenever I try and make a call, the call drops instantly and I cannot send any SMS.
I have checked my IMEI status and the phone is not blocked, so that can't be the issue. Also tried checking the message and call centre numbers but they are fine. Does anone have any advice?

I would try 'Resetting all network settings\”. Also launch Cydia nad make sure you have the latest version of blacksn0w (the unlock program).

It is very easy my friend!
All you have to do is : Update to 3.0 (stock Apple firmware (look for it in Downloads) first, then jailbreak it using Redsn0w. Once you see Cydia, put your iPhone in Restore mode and restore to the custom firmware found here.
You may also try Geohot's Blackra1n to jailbreak once you directly restore to 3.1.2 (Apple stock firmware).

Yes i've done that BUT , Ok I got the pwnage tool 3.1.4 I make a Custom IPSW and when I get to the DFU mode my Mac says the I have to connect the Phone when in fact it is connected It stucked there and If I enter DFU mode manually it still waiting for it to be in DFU mode and when Im restarting the phone the Mac Recognizes the device and everything is not synchronized and I CANT DO IT,, driving me crazy really
