Download Custom Firmware 3.1.2 IPSW – Jailbreak, Activate, Unlock iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS [Mac and Windows]

13 October 2009 973 Comments

iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS users can now safely update to 3.1.2 firmware without updating the baseband (for unlock). If you are not the one to download all the various files and just want the ultimate result, these files are waiting for you to download! If you rather want to start from scratch, download Pwnage 3.1.4 tool for Mac.

  • Caution #1 : A restore is going to wipe the iPhone clean. Hence, please backup your iPhone using iTunes and then proceed.

More info about these custom firmware files :

  • Has factory boot logos (Apple and restore cable),
  • Only Cydia, No Icy
  • Preserved Unlock baseband (that is the whole point of a custom firmware, right?!)
  • Activated/Not Activated (Check the files carefully)

Prerequisite (recommended) :

If your iPhone is already jailbroken at the current firmware (3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1), it will be a hassle free upgrade! Restore mode will work just fine with already jailbroken iPhones.

Step 1.1) Download Files for iPhone 3GS (Please read the following carefully)

p.s : I am paying for these downloads (purchased RapidShare Download traffic due to overwhelming demand). Please consider donating to keep these downloads free and instantaneous. Thank you…

OR

Step 1.2) Download Files for iPhone 3G (Please read the following carefully)

OR

Step 1.3) Download Files for iPhone 2G (Please read the following carefully)

OR

Step 2) Join the downloaded files

  • The files downloaded above have an extension .001 and .002. They need a special opensource (free) software HJSplit to join.
  • Download HJSplit to join both the files – Link for Windows Computers here and Macs here.

Step 3) Restore the firmware in iTunes 9.x

  • You should now have the respective firmware file with an extension .ipsw (make sure it is .ipsw or else, it will give you an invalid firmware error) . Follow the steps in order :
  • 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.
  • 2)If your iPhone is already jailbroken (if you see Cydia on your iPhone!), put your device in Restore mode (Turn iPhone off, keep holding Home button while you plug it in to your computer). Proceed to step 7. If not jailbroken already, continue to the next step (3).
  • 3)If you are aware of DFU mode, proceed further. If not, watch this quick video and pay close attention to the steps to achieve DFU mode.
  • 4)Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds.
  • 5)After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
  • 6)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).
  • 7)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.
  • 8)For a Mac : Hold Option key and then hit Restore button.
  • 9)For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.
  • 10)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file (the .ipsw file that you downloaded and joined using hjsplit in step 1.x).

Step 4) Give it few minutes to perform the restore. Once the iPhone is up and running, proceed for software Unlock using Cydia. Follow this guide to install Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS. iPhone 2G is already unlocked with this custom firmware!

You are now good to go! Post a comment if you are stuck at any of the steps described above.

[Pwnage Tool is developed by the Dev Team. This is just a custom firmware file created using that tool especially for Windows users cos’ Pwnage tool is available only for Macs.]

What kind of problems? Does the file size differ? If you downloaded them both fully and joined using hjsplit, the resulting file should have .ipsw extension. What does iTunes say?

    Dear All:
Need your help. I bouth an iphone 3g 3.1.2 bb 5.11.07. The guy who sold to me told, that the phone is unlocked, however when I put the TM sim, it says no service. I took the phone to several places to unlock it once again, however the phone does not recognize and activate with ATT sim while restore process using iTunes.

Based on my firmware and version, can I use the above activated files and use blackra1n and snow to unlock the phone to work with t-mobile? Right now the phone is jail broken, since blackra1n RC3 needs fresh install, I would like to restore once again using the above activated files.

Please suggest whether I can unlock 3G 3.1.2 WITH bb 5.11.07 using the above process? PLEASE SUGGEST. Much appreciated your help.

  • kkiran said:

Yes, please go ahead and use this custom firmware followed by blacksn0w and not blackra1n. blackra1n is for jailbreaking which can be achieved using this custom firmware. blacksn0w is for the actual unlock. If you have already jailbroken your device, why not install blacksn0w from Cydia first before you even use this custom firmware?

  • JAI321 said:

    Thanks Kiran for the reply.
I acutally used blacksnOw to unlock several times without restoring the phone. However, it says NoService all the time. When I took it to the repair guy, he tried to restore. During the restore process he put his ATT sim during the activation SIM. The phone did not recognize his ATT sim. So, May be because of activation process did not happen, is it saying no service?

That is the reason, I would like to use the Activated Custom Firmware above to avoid ATT sim activation step during the restor. Is my understanding right? Can I go ahead and restore and use blacksnow as suggested?

    Thanks much for your help.

    I have Windows Vista

  • kkiran said:

For iPhone 2G, you may also try redsn0w directly on 3.1.2. Download it from 'Downloads' link (unlocking tools)…

  • Dottie said:

Iam having a similar problem. When i download the firmware it is not in an IPSW any suggestions?

  • Kiran said:

If it is Windows, you have to enable show extensions from folder options (if the extensions are hidden). Once you join both the files, it should have an extension or you may add it.

hi, my iphone 3gs was unlocked and jail broken using 3.1.2. I accidently updated to OS 4 via itunes 9.2 and now its locked. Will the above described method work to unlock and jailbreak it again? If not what should I do otherwise. Any advice is much appreciated 🙂

  • kkiran said:

Unfortunately, with 3GS iPhone, things are slightly complicated. It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish : do you have an official iPhone contract or are you trying to unlock? It also depends on your bootloader – did you ever jailbreak your iPhone before?

  • Littlemik said:

    Hi Kiran
I did the same thing – I have a 3gs (jailbroken 3.1.2 with blackra1n) then accidentally upgraded to iOS4. What I want to do is jailbreak iOS4. I do not have a contract and my bootstrap is now 5.13.04.

  • kkiran said:

Not to worry, do you have a Mac or Windows computer? Using Pwnage 4.01 on a Mac should solve the problem for you. If on Windows, then a custom firmware should work. I will send you the download links if you want to check them out.

  • Littlemik said:

    Hi Kiran
Thanks. I would appreciate you sending me the links for Windows!

  • kkiran said:

Activated firmware or Not Activated firmware?

  • Littlemik said:

    Hi Kiran
I am not sure. What's the difference?

  • Littlemik said:

I have downloaded "iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw" for 3gS. I was going to jailbreak it with Blackra1n then use Sn0wbreeze on "iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw". Would that work?

  • kkiran said:

    Technically speaking, that should work.

  • mordani_kunal said:

hey r u planning to relase a i os 4.0 jben firmware . will b gratefull if u did thnx

  • kkiran said:

Custom iOS 4 is rather too complicated at this stage. I don't want to get into it just yet since it may cause problems with newer iPhone 3GS…

I have 3GS running 3.1.2 already jailbroken with blakra1n and running cydia.
i have an old bootrom and modem is 05.11.07.
i need to do this because some process is running in the backgroung and draining my battery, tried everything so this is my last chace.
i need the phone unlocked because i'm using t-mobile, is this safe for me?

  • kiran said:

I would suggest 4.0 custom firmware with updated baseband for battery issues. Hope you have 3.1.2 blobs on cydia…

  • Yael said:

i don't, the battery issue was caused right after i restored from a backup.
i read online about it and the only way is to restore to factory defaults, but i can't so i thought that this might solve the problem.

Hi. I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with 3.0.1 baseband 4.26.08. Will I need to unlock it to connect to my carrier (it is currently unlocked as I am not using the "official" iPhone carrier).? The problem is my WiFi does not work and I rely on my carrier to connect to internet. If I restore using the custom firmware I am understanding Cydia will be installed but will I be able to access General>Network>Cellular Data Network in order to set my carrier's APN for Cellular Data?

  • Kiran said:

Yes, you shall be able to. If not, we can enable it, no problem.

  • franvall said:

What I mean by "restore using the custom firmware" is use the 3.1.2 custom firmware downloaded from the link posted here.

  • kkiran said:

    Yep, you may proceed.

Hi I currently have a problem, I have a 3GS with baseband 05.11.07 running 3.1.2 firmware from Apple but I already jailbreak it using BlackRa1n and Unlocked it using BlackSnow. It works for a long while but recently due to some issues I wanted to clear all the content and setting on my phone and I went into Setting to Clear All Contents and Setting. During the process of Resetting, the phone failed to boot and it kept on restarting. I'm either stuck at the BlackRa1n portrait screen or at the Restore screen. Right now I'm in Restore screen and tried to Restore 3.1.2 (Apple no longer sign this firmware so of course it didnt work.) then I tried 3.1.3 but it said my phone is not eligible for this build. Now I wonder if this custom firmware will solve my problem? I dont have ATT contract and Im on T-Mobile. I've never install custom firmware so if this works for my phone I would like to use it. Any suggestion to help me with my issue everyone? Thank you in advance. My computer is Window 7 x64, iTune 9.2

  • Kiran said:

Custom restore is your best bet! Follow the steps verbatim. You might as well try iOS 4.0 Custom firmware instead.

Does it matter if I have SHSH saved on cydia? (Well it is on the phone but I do not know how to access and use it for this) My 3G iphone is unlock and is on the 3.1.2 baseband 5.11.07. I would like to stay on the 3.1.2. But it is in a continuous loop at the logo, therefore I need to restore however, I do not want to update to 4.0.1. By using this method, it should allow me to restore to 3.1.2…right? Also, if I do download the non-activate firmware, that means in the future, I can not unlock? I have a Window Vista 64 bit with iTunes 8.2.1.6 if this information is helpful. Or should I use the files on iClarified?

You will have to use redsn0w for iPhone 2G, look at that post. Don't bother with custom ipsw for iPhone 2G.

when u get the error don't pull out ur phone. u should see a white screen. just close itunes and reopen it. they will pick back up the phone but this time when u press restore it should work.

If anyone download iPhone 3.1.2 firmware using Internet Explorer (IE), it will be downloaded as .zip file, to overcome this and to download it as .ipsw you have to use firefox instead

Or just change the file extension in windows after youve downloaded it, lol. Doh!!!
