iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS users can now safely update to 3.1.2 firmware without updating the baseband (for unlock). If you are not the one to download all the various files and just want the ultimate result, these files are waiting for you to download! If you rather want to start from scratch, download Pwnage 3.1.4 tool for Mac.
- Caution #1 : A restore is going to wipe the iPhone clean. Hence, please backup your iPhone using iTunes and then proceed.
More info about these custom firmware files :
- Has factory boot logos (Apple and restore cable),
- Only Cydia, No Icy
- Preserved Unlock baseband (that is the whole point of a custom firmware, right?!)
- Activated/Not Activated (Check the files carefully)
Prerequisite (recommended) :
If your iPhone is already jailbroken at the current firmware (3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1), it will be a hassle free upgrade! Restore mode will work just fine with already jailbroken iPhones.
p.s : I am paying for these downloads (purchased RapidShare Download traffic due to overwhelming demand). Please consider donating to keep these downloads free and instantaneous. Thank you…

Step 2) Join the downloaded files
- The files downloaded above have an extension .001 and .002. They need a special opensource (free) software HJSplit to join.
- Download HJSplit to join both the files – Link for Windows Computers here and Macs here.
Step 3) Restore the firmware in iTunes 9.x
- You should now have the respective firmware file with an extension .ipsw (make sure it is .ipsw or else, it will give you an invalid firmware error) . Follow the steps in order :
- 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.
- 2)If your iPhone is already jailbroken (if you see Cydia on your iPhone!), put your device in Restore mode (Turn iPhone off, keep holding Home button while you plug it in to your computer). Proceed to step 7. If not jailbroken already, continue to the next step (3).
- 3)If you are aware of DFU mode, proceed further. If not, watch this quick video and pay close attention to the steps to achieve DFU mode.
- 4)Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds.
- 5)After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
- 6)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).
- 7)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.
- 8)For a Mac : Hold Option key and then hit Restore button.
- 9)For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.
- 10)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file (the .ipsw file that you downloaded and joined using hjsplit in step 1.x).
Step 4) Give it few minutes to perform the restore. Once the iPhone is up and running, proceed for software Unlock using Cydia. Follow this guide to install Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS. iPhone 2G is already unlocked with this custom firmware!
You are now good to go! Post a comment if you are stuck at any of the steps described above.
[Pwnage Tool is developed by the Dev Team. This is just a custom firmware file created using that tool especially for Windows users cos’ Pwnage tool is available only for Macs.]

I used this method to upgrade a 2G to 3.12 unlocked to T-mobile. Now all apps from iTunes do not work. Apps from Cydia work well. Any ideas

Un-Sync and sync them again. Really weird though, they should work technically. Never heard of this issue before.

If never jailbroken – DFU is the way to go.
Did you try the 1600 error solution?

Please Please email me (acv999@hotmail.com) to help. Nothing is working and I've resorted to taking the sim out and using my old Motorola V3xx. Please help. It's just sitting there with the plug&itunes graphics and when I try shift+restore, it comes back and says error 1600. Please help.

Restart your iPhone… It is strange, Cydia should show up on the homescreen. What us the modem firmware version? Hoping you put the custom firmware and not the stock one…

Hope you would be patient with this iphone noobie. I am interested in purchasing a use iphone to be used on ATT using my old sim card. I read a little about the activation process and read that if I use itunes to activate the phone, I will automatically sign up a 2 year contract with ATT (which I prefer not to do). If I do purchase an iphone 3g, would I use the "activated" version then since I don't have a contract for iphone through ATT? Also by using this custom firmware, there is no need for activation so therefore no contract am I correct?
Thanks for a great site btw. I stumbled on this site while searching about activation iphones without contract.

First things first – If you are planning on buying an unlocked iPhone – Please, please make sure the baseband is 4.26 or less (Settings -> General -> About -> Modem Firmware), definitely not 5.11. Ask the seller, confirm and if it is 4.26, you can then go about doing all kinds of cool things including jailbreak and unlock! If interested, look at my offerings (want iPhone link at the top)..

I have jailbroken the 3GS 3.1.2 by using Pwnage 3.1.4 but cannot unlock, my set was from U.S. is your firmware be able to restore and unlock the phone?
valter
I tried this with my 3G, baseband 2.28.00, and it's not working. Guessing that the old baseband is the problem, so how do I upgrade the baseband without upgrading it to 05.11.07?
valter
the software unlock is the thing that doesn't work! forgot to mention… jailbreak works fine

Oh, then look for 'Yellowsn0w' in Cydia. That should do the trick!
valter
oh thank you very much for the quick answer.
is there any pros having newer baseband?
iLikeMyiPhone
I would always go with the newer baseband! It is new for a reason – bug fixes, quality, better battery (just my thoughts)!
valter
all right. do I upgrade it via iTunes? is it just to plug it in and follow instructions? sorry for having all these question, but I'm really scared to upgrade too far!

Be very careful. First download Apple's stock firmware (3.0 3G) from downloads link above and place the .ipsw file on the desktop.
Then, connect your iPhone to your PC and hold the shift key on the keyboard and while holding it, push the restore button – a dialog window pops up, then navigate to the ipsw file that was previously placed on the desktop. Off you go!

Since 2.28 is way too old (yellowsn0w still works for 2.28), you have to first update/restore your iPhone to 3.0 stock Apple firmware and then go about custom firmware found here to get to 3.1.2 with 4.26 baseband…

Hi,
I live in the Netherlands and the only carrier that delivers official iPhones contracts is T-mobile. In the US this different. Which one do I need to download? The firmware for official carriers (ATT..) or the other one?
Iphone 3G, 16GB firmware 3.0
Greetings,
iLikeMyiPhone
You told about the official carrier but do you have that official carrier or are you planning on unlocking it and then using? If unlocking – then use the activated firmware.

I have a question. I JB my iphone with a custom downloaded 3.1.2 firmware with the 4.26 baseband. When it finishes, it asks if i want to update my carrier? to 5.6 Do I or should i update it?
I updated the carrier but still couldn't send mms. Also, when I go into the general-about, it does not have at&t at the network. It just says not available. I'm currently a at&t user. Can anyone help with this? Let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the firmware, i am installing the second unlock option for my 3g!

worked great on my JB 3GS 32GB quick and painless ๐

Strange. Downloading them again. Maybe hjsplit doesn't tell you if the download is corrupted? Thanks.
iLikeMyiPhone
Not sure about the file size determination by hjsplit but yeah, the second file was not fully downloaded I guess. Try getting the second file and then join them!
