iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS users can now safely update to 3.1.2 firmware without updating the baseband (for unlock). If you are not the one to download all the various files and just want the ultimate result, these files are waiting for you to download! If you rather want to start from scratch, download Pwnage 3.1.4 tool for Mac.
- Caution #1 : A restore is going to wipe the iPhone clean. Hence, please backup your iPhone using iTunes and then proceed.
More info about these custom firmware files :
- Has factory boot logos (Apple and restore cable),
- Only Cydia, No Icy
- Preserved Unlock baseband (that is the whole point of a custom firmware, right?!)
- Activated/Not Activated (Check the files carefully)
Prerequisite (recommended) :
If your iPhone is already jailbroken at the current firmware (3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1), it will be a hassle free upgrade! Restore mode will work just fine with already jailbroken iPhones.
p.s : I am paying for these downloads (purchased RapidShare Download traffic due to overwhelming demand). Please consider donating to keep these downloads free and instantaneous. Thank you…

Step 2) Join the downloaded files
- The files downloaded above have an extension .001 and .002. They need a special opensource (free) software HJSplit to join.
- Download HJSplit to join both the files – Link for Windows Computers here and Macs here.
Step 3) Restore the firmware in iTunes 9.x
- You should now have the respective firmware file with an extension .ipsw (make sure it is .ipsw or else, it will give you an invalid firmware error) . Follow the steps in order :
- 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.
- 2)If your iPhone is already jailbroken (if you see Cydia on your iPhone!), put your device in Restore mode (Turn iPhone off, keep holding Home button while you plug it in to your computer). Proceed to step 7. If not jailbroken already, continue to the next step (3).
- 3)If you are aware of DFU mode, proceed further. If not, watch this quick video and pay close attention to the steps to achieve DFU mode.
- 4)Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds.
- 5)After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
- 6)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).
- 7)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.
- 8)For a Mac : Hold Option key and then hit Restore button.
- 9)For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.
- 10)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file (the .ipsw file that you downloaded and joined using hjsplit in step 1.x).
Step 4) Give it few minutes to perform the restore. Once the iPhone is up and running, proceed for software Unlock using Cydia. Follow this guide to install Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS. iPhone 2G is already unlocked with this custom firmware!
You are now good to go! Post a comment if you are stuck at any of the steps described above.
[Pwnage Tool is developed by the Dev Team. This is just a custom firmware file created using that tool especially for Windows users cos’ Pwnage tool is available only for Macs.]

Hi, I using a factory unlocked 3G set (in Singapore). But I'm not on the official supported telcom though. But because the set is factory unlocked, I'm able to use it with any telcom.
My question is which cfw should I use – the 3G activated or not activated cfw?
Thanks very much!
Omid
Hi Everyone, I tried to read your posts and am a bit confused sorry !!
I have a JB and UL iphone 3Gs wihch I got from Rogers.
Which version do i use Activated or NON-Activated?
Omid
Also forgot to ask once i upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2 do I need to unlock again?
iLikeMyiPhone
You will have to unlock again using ultrasn0w…
iLikeMyiPhone
It depends on the following :
1) Is it factory unlocked?
2) Did you sign an official contract?
3) What network do you use?
Since you were referring to unlock, I would suggest Activated firmware….
Omid
1) it was not factory unlocked I unlocked my self using ultrasnow
2) yes i have a contract with Rogers
3) its a 3G network
iLikeMyiPhone
Then it will be NotActivated firmware…
Omid
THANK YOU for your replies, I upgraded with NON-Activated then proceded to Unlock with Ultrasn0w and added appsyn as well as cix my carrear. and EVERYTHING is GOOD!!!!
Thanks again

Rogers – You should use NotActivated firmware since they offer iPhones officially!

My iphone 3G is factory unlocked for carrier A (officially) but I'm using it on supported carrier B, I like to verify that I should use the NotActivated cfw rite? Thanks!

Working So Cool I Used The Activited One For iPhone 3G Working Perfect With My iTunes 8.2 Thanks Very Much
akiden
Ok I'll try it out and post outcome after I've tried it. Thanks for the reply!

Can you advise what difference does it really make if I use NotActivated cfw with 600mb or 1gb memory size? My 3G is only 8gb so am a little concerned if 1gb partition in the cfw will reduce my disk space by too much so I like to know what difference is 1gb able to provide over 600mb partition.
Thanks!

Hi, just wanted to stop in and say THANK YOU for the custom firmware. I have a 3G now on 3.1.2 with a preserved baseband. I followed your directions to the letter starting with putting my iPhone in restore mode. Everything worked as normal and I did not receive any errors. Again, my gratitude and my thanks 🙂

wow! what a great first result in Google!
I came searching ways to upgrade my 2G to the newest firmware after having it on 3.0 forever!
thanks a lot! downloading the files right now, hopefully it will all go smoothly and I'll finally be able to leave the 3.0 station

Thank you 🙂
I would suggest you first jailbreak your device at 3.0 and then use restore mode to get to 3.1.2! Easy and hassle free!

i have a iphone 3gs 32gb, factory unlocked from italy. i have upgraded from fw 3.0.1 to fw 3.1.2 customware that you have posted on yourwebsite. i am using pay asyougo from three.ie. Now my problem is that i have used the wrong customware ie the activated version instead of the NonActivated version. I realise this mistake after reading another user advice from Singapore.
I tried to restore from Activated fw to NonActivated fw using itunes but it says that the firmware version is different and cant proceed. What do you guys suggest i should do.. Currently im downloading the original 3.1.2 from itunes and thinking of using blackrain. Is this the right way to go ? Thanks
iLikeMyiPhone
Since your iPhone is factory unlocked, blackra1n should do the trick.

I tried to restore from activated version to Non activated version, but fails as itunes indicates that it is different fimware…i'm lost.
Should i now download the official 3.1.2 from i tunes and use blackrain?
Your advice is much appreciated. Thanks !

i cant combine the two file i downloaded .001 and .002 using split and concat program

Make sure the extensions of those files are 0.001 and 0.002 (enable extensions in folder actions if need be)… Also make sure the files were completely downloaded.

I Have An iphone 3g, 3.1.2 FW, thanks to you, And running vista 64 bit. Just wodering why can't i change my timezone in settings. Everytime i change it to New York, USA time zone, then restart the phone, it revert back to Washington, DC USA. just wondering if anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? I would love to hear from anyone about this, or is there a fix in any way. followed steps from your custom firmare, and everything works great, with the exception of no tmobile at the top left corner, but i can live with that. Please get back, thank you

I noticed the same too. They are both in the same timezone so why worry?! All it does is EST!
There is a carrier fix app in Cydia if you need to see the logo!
