Requirements :
If your iPhone is currently using tethered jailbreak, then please sync/backup on iTunes and then restore it to a custom 3.1.2 firmware. Please post a comment if you are confused. If this step is done wrong, your unlock is gone.
Your iPhone should be activated/hacktivated and not unlocked before using the Spirit Jailbreak.
Try blackra1n for activation or the custom firmware.
Spirit Jailbreak facilitates an untethered jailbreak and it ain’t an unlock for 5.12.01 baseband btw.
Unlock is still pending, waiting for iPhone 4.0 firmware to hit the scene maybe!
How to run :
1) Download Spirit Jailbreak for the appropriate platform (Windows/Mac) :
2) Connect your iDevice (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) to your PC/Mac and double click the downloaded file
3) Click on Jailbreak! You will see some nice purple goodness on your iDevice.
4) You will now have Cydia and untethered jailbreak as a bonus!
If you got this dreaded c0000005 message, right click on Spirit Jailbreak and run it in compatibility mode (Win 98/95).
Ask a question if you have an iota of doubt since this is serious stuff. Enjoy your untethered jailbreak now!
If you have used blackra1n (tethered) before and have modem firmware (baseband) of 5.11.07, follow this. Credit to Peter Pan for the tip. I tried the above method on a Mac and it worked flawlessly on a stock 3.1.3 3GS iPhone. If you want to preserve unlock, then try the following :
1. Sync/backup your iPhone in iTunes
2. Download custom 3.1.2 firmware
3. Download IREB 3.1-3
4. Restart your iPhone, it will boot in recovery mode
5. Use IREB, chose model (3g for 3gs), then choose use iTunes to restore the custom firmware downloaded in step 2
6. After restore, and yes, for me it worked without having access to the SHSH server, you need to activate your iPhone in iTunes (put in a sim card with is allowed just to boot and activate, or use a pre-activated 3.1.2)
7. Now you have a factory setting “new” 3.1.2. which will boot as normal, then use SPIRIT to jailbreak
8. Phone will boot, you will notice the logo during first boot (Spirit one)
9. You have a jailbroken phone with 3.1.2 and untherered boot now!
9.a. Establish WIFI connection
10. Open Cydia, add http://blackra1n.com as new repo
11. Search for “blacksn0w” app
12. Run blacksnow which will also unlock your phone.
13 Restart Phone with SIM card of your choice
14 et voila..you have a 3.1.2 phone with unlock and jailbreak.Took me a couple of hours to get there, now I am giving it to you…

Make sure SHSH files are stored on Cydia. Just launch Cydia to verify. On the top you will see message saying SHSH files are stored on the server for the respective firmware.
Do you need unlock too?
You have 2 options – custom firmware 3.1.3 or editing hosts file and installing 3.1.2… Lete know which one you prefer.
Yes it will. So, connect to iTunes and let it sync and perform a full backup. You can then restore this data later after jailbreaking..

It really depends on your baseband. Let me know the modem firmware (settings-> general-> about).

after that my phone goes on itunes logo. now i am not able to do any thing i am not able to restore my iphone to 3.1.2 and blackra1n is also not working

Can you help out here at all?? I have the same problem. Tried jailbreak with Spirit on my phone that was already jailbroken 3.1.2 tethered by blackra1n and now my phone is stuck in restore mode. The stupid tutorial I followed said everything should be fine and I don't have to do anything before using Spirit on my already jailbroken phone. I have tons of contacts and photos that aren't saved anywhere else. I can't lose all that

Steps to move from blackra1n to spirit
1. backup your phone in itunes
2. download a clean 3.1.2 firmware (google it)
3. download IREB 3.1-3

I believe 3.1.2 is the latest version for iReb. Try that.

Yeah, without shsh files, it is a big risk. You may try 3.1.3 custom firmware but if it is stuck in restore mode or sth, you may lose unlock.
But Peter pan stated that he restored without shsh how so?
I don't believe that is possible at all since 3GS has a server sign-check mechanism now. Unless you use the replay attack (editing hosts file and pointing to Saurik's server), there is no way you can restore without SHSH. Trust me, I have tried it already!
i have a 3gs with 3.1.2 and have 05.11.07 and am using blackrain I want untethered from spirit but I dont need the unlock as I am in japan and also dont haveca great need to change my carrier. Really I just unlock for the 3g-unrestrictor so I can use skype. can I just backup with Itunes and restore and then spirit and not mess with the custom firmware or ???
You have to backup. Then you have to restore to a fresh firmware, why not try the 3.1.3 custom firmware to avoid the hassles of SHSH? Once restored to 3.1.3, don't unlock, just use SPirit and then use blacksn0w.
What about the Iphone 3GS running stock 313 firm? Will this jailbreak it?
Yep, I tried with a new 3.1.3 stock and it worked without a hitch. Try it and you have nothing to lose if on stock firmware.. Good to see ya here!
I have a iphone 3gs running 3.1.2 custom firmware jailbroken modem firmware baseband 4.26.08 untethered. I have a custom firmware 3.1.3 downloaded. Can i just restore to the custom firmware 3.1.3 and be jailbroken again, or use this and it ask me to find the 3.1.3 like Itunes instead? Or do I need to just upgrade normally to 3.1.3 and lose my jailbreak and then run spirit and be jailbroken? For 3.1.2 I just downloaded custom 3.1.2 and restored to it and was ok there is 3.1.3 using the same method.
If you have your shsh files stored on Cydia, you may try 3.1.3 custom firmware. Once 3.1.3 is installed, you may then use spirit for untethered jailbreak.

well once install the custom 3.1.3 the way I did custom 3.1.2 I wont have to use spirit. not the official firmware. I did 3.1.2 custom firmware restore from the iphonehacks web page and they have the same steps for 3.1.3. just wondering if i could run spirit now while im on custom jailbroke 3.1.2 and it upgrades it to a jailbroken 3.1.3?
Spirit will jailbreak your iPhone only at firmware your iPhone is at right now. You need a fresh 3.1.2/3.1.3 activated firmware for it to work.
So I would suggest doing either a 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 custom firmware first and then spirit.
Has this jailbreak been tested on the ipod touch 2g. Also are there any problems to be worried about
No i havent i used redsnow to jailbreak 3.0. So all i need to do is restore my 2nd gen to 3.1.2
As far as I know, 3.1.2 is a paid upgrade for iPod Touch should be downloaded via iTunes. Once you have it, you may then use redsn0w or spirit jailbreak.
Will this unlock iphone 3Gs 313 I know it will jailbreak it as you mentioned…but what about an unlock?
05.12 baseband is still not unlockable… 05.11 is the latest baseband that can be unlocked..
I have a tethered iphone 3gs(new boot rom, unlocked, 3.1.2+05.11.07, winXP). But I don't have 3.1.2SHSH blob. Can I untethered jailbreak with new boot rom with your post step? Please tell me.
It is risky if it is stuck in restore mode or DFU mode. 3.1.3 Custom firmware may help but I cannot guarantee the results.

hi there.i have a question.i have 3gs.never ever jailbroken or unlocked.its running on original 3.1.2 and bb 5.11.07.i put in it some free apps and games.right now theres no sim in it and i wanna get it unlocked and untethered jailbroken.my question is tht do i need to restore it or i can directly conect and run spirit and thn blacksnow to get it unlocked?im a new to all this so a detailed answer would be highly apreciated.i repeat i never run blackrain on it.never been jailbroken before.has its original factory 3.1.2 running.
Spirit needs a freshly restored, activated iPhone. It should be unlocked only after you run Spirit. Unfortunately since you don't have your SHSH files on Cydia since you never jailbroke before, this can be a risky process for your unlock.

Spirit needs freshly activated firmware.Looks like you don't rely on the unlock part, so I would say it is a safe deal but I would recommend a fresh 3.1.3 custom firmware install and then Spirit.

I have a stock iPhone 3Gs running firmware 3.1.2 (7D11) w/ bb 05.11.07. I have never done a tethered Jailbreak with blackra1n or anything of the like. It is still on factory settings.
Can someone please tell me if it is safe for me to just run Spirit and jailbreak my iPhone AS IS?
I am not trying to unlock, I am only trying to acquire untethered jailbreak.
If any preliminary steps are needed, what would they be?

Since you don't have SHSH files on file with Cydia, you may have to use custom firmware 3.1.3 and then use Spirit if untethered is needed.
You can try jailbreaking at 3.1.2 directly but if it is stuck in DFU mode, then there is no going back to 3.1.2 or the 5.11.07 baseband.
Is it really safe to jailbreak an iPad? Does Mac know this? Cause I don't want my iPad to break or get damaged.
It is lot safer to jailbreak an iPad than an iPhone! Go for it, just restore to factory when going for warranty/repair.
mine is 3gs 3.1.2 jailbroken via blackra1n.. wanna change into spirit 1.. my questions are
1. do i need to upgrade to 3.1.3 vers? i know if i do that my iphone will stuck forever until vers 4 come
