Tim Cook openly apologized about the sub-par iOS 6 maps. He suggested a whole bunch of 3rd party apps instead. Google reportedly did not hand over the necessary data for turn-by-turn directions which prompted Apple to release their own mapping solution.
Apple v/s Scout : My experiences
I personally used Scout app (by TeleNav) when it was free for a month. I launched it on the iPhone 5 and lo behold, Scout offered a free year of turn-by-turn based navigation which is voice enabled. It is pretty neat and gets the job …

Not sure if I am doing something terribly wrong but landscape shots are always Letterboxed on the iPhone 5.
I would like to know why! It is really annoying. Josh’s review showed one of this letterboxing. I don’t think I want to edit every image taken with iPhone 5 to remove the letterboxing.
Here is a raw sample shot with my iPhone 5.

It looks fine once imported but on the iPhone itself, it shows those 2 ugly black strips in landscape mode.

Don’t get me wrong – iPhone 5 has a stunning camera …

iOS looks more or less the same over the years. I think Apple doesn’t want to risk it with the UI – not with a money making machine in hand! Remember the Mac OS X? Any UI changes over the years? Nah. Definitely not like Windows 7 to Windows 8!
So, what Apple can do to not be such a bore with the UI is that they should take those touch gestures to the next level. Remember the very first jailbreak where you could launch a rainbow like list of App …

I made this video when I was learning to use Siri. Siri handles simple queries and little complicated ones if you wish. Siri is a virtual assistant on all iPhones starting iPhone 4S. Siri is the by-product of a lot of data mining and it is one of the best artificial intelligence enabled assistants you have ever encountered. Siri got some attitude as well – try arguing with Siri and you shall see!
Here is a conversation with Siri. My queries revolved around the US Stock Market – the basics like share price, …

You will need a nano-SIM for your iPhone 5 which your carrier provides. You might also cut your original SIM or micro-SIM to fit in your iPhone 5. I generally don’t sign contracts. I prefer buying phones with no-commitment pricing (generally Craigslist or eBay). I had to sign a contract to get the iPhone 5 since it is not immediately available as an unlocked variant.
Logged in to my AT&T upgrade portal via AT&T premier (business discount). I was overjoyed to see the unlimited data plan that I was grandfathered in …

Apple iPhone 5 preorders debuted at 3:00 AM EST today giving folks in the west coast an unfair advantage. The delivery times are now showing a 2 week delay at Apple. Ordering from your carrier (in may case, AT&T which still says the iPhone 5 can be delivered on Sep 21st) or Walmart (at a discount, no less!) might be your best bets.
Ordering from your carrier is always the best route if you get some employer discounts. I ordered through AT&T Premier and got the upgrade fee waived automagically and …

Update : The link provided here is for Apple Canada site. US availability is not known yet but starts at $649 instead of the reported $699.

It is available to preorder starting September 14, 2012 with delivery date pegged at September 21st. If I were you, I would buy it online – get some cashback, free shipping and …

apple, ATT, FaceTime, iOS 6, iPhone 4S »

Apple and AT&T decided that it is a great idea to charge for FaceTime on the iPhone! If you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, you will not be able to FaceTime over cellular network. iOS 6 beta builds did not enforce the restriction but iOS 6 GM build (Gold Master) wasted no time splashing this message when I tried using FaceTime. AT&T expects you to sign up for their mobile share option which is expensive if you have only a line or 2 in your account. I have an …
