Jailbreak, Activate, Unlock and Customize iPhone 1.1.2 the Easy way (so far)!!

Well, now that 1.1.2 is released for quite some time now – why is the world not abuzz about upgrading to it? Mostly because – there is no reason to! Some say 1.1.2 sports better battery life while others say the iPhone performs faster (did it ever under perform?)!! For whatever reason, if you want to upgrade to the latest and still enjoy all the features (including unlock!!).Activating an iPhone 1.1.2 without iTunes is really a big deal because INdependence doesn’t support 1.1.2 yet and iDemocracy wasted some valuable hours due to poor or insufficent documentation! He did a great job with .Net F/W 3.5 but the app itself is too complicated – well Windows users have no other choice when it comes to 1.1.2.So, my current setup : iPhone 8GB, Cingular sim (no iPhone contract), Macbook (Leopard), 1.1.2 Jailbreak s/w from Conceited S/W, iTunes 7.4.2 and lots of patience 😉

  1. Assuming your iPhone is up and running on 1.1.1 with installer.app on it. Not on 1.1.1 yet, check this fastest guide now!
  2. (If you unlocked your iPhone using anySIM, please Virginize your iPhone before updating. It can easily be done by using unlocking tools from i.unlock.no. Just hit virginize for your firmware).
  3. Now, install OktoPrep under Tweaks 1.1.1 section in installer.app to prepare your iPhone to 1.1.2.
  4. Now update your iPhone to 1.1.2 from iTunes as usual. Don’t hit Restore, hit update instead 🙂 Don’t worry about any errors it spits out. If update fails, just see if your iPhone still has firmware 1.1.1 and OktoPrep installed (Very Imp). Then proceed with update from iTunes. (It should work this time).
  5. If your iPhone is still shown in Restore mode, then launch iNdependence 1.2.5 to kick the iPhone out of it.Your iPhone is updated to 1.1.2 if your iPhone shows the new activation screen with Emergency calls slider written in 3 different languages.
  6. Now comes the Jailbreak step which was complicated till now. Not anymore. Conceited Software made it so easy with the latest release of jailbreak software. All you have to do is launch jailbreak.jar and relax! Follow the on-screen instructions (Reboot the iPhone when told and voila : Your iPhone is activated!!). There is a Windows.bat(present in the jailbreak software you downloaded before) for Windows users which I didn’t try.
  7. Now that your iPhone is activated, time to unlock it. You already have installer.app showing if you came this far. You can unlock your iPhone using iphone-elite’s version of anySIM.
  8. As far as customization is concerned, we already have installer.app and almost all the apps are reported to be working just fine with 1.1.2 (Customize has an option for 1.1.2 inbuilt). There you go, comment in case of jubiliant victories/failures 🙂

p.s : I spent long hours figuring out the right procedures for activation and stuff but my aim is to save others from wasting their time!! Please support Conceited software and iPhone Devs to continue this journey 🙂

i’ve had my iphone 1.1.2 otb since xmas, both my wife and i bought each other one (silly yes, but love makes you do silly things) still waiting for unlock for it though, but we got patience with seeing the cost of the turbosim and such, just wanted to say hi to everybody =] and see if anybody else has anything cool on their iphones that they recommend

@Pheak :: Hi! Sorry to hear that you have 2 iPhones without the phone functionality to test 🙁 I know how it feels… Hack to unlock OTB iPhones seems unlikely and I am currently reviewing the best SIMS to do it for all of us. It is complicated for now. I was bargaining with a chinese supplier for hyper sims – they agreed for $25 a piece for 100 pieces and that is too much for me to invest in 🙁 Anyways, it is worth the wait, lets see what Jobs has in store for us in MacWorld…

are you telling us that Apple has managed to provide something that is NOT hackable?! (apart from the sim card method which is too much hassle).

I hope not. must confress I am disappointed this has taken this long and no hack avail.. but hey.. I never managed to come up with a hack so..

    peace,
    eric

    hi admin,

just read on the iphone.unlock.no site that it is possible to unlock an otb 1.1.2 iphone using the hardware method. just wanted to conf if anyone has done it? and is it safe?

hoping that a software unlock for 1.1.2 OTB is out soon 🙂

@Eric : I guess no software unlock would sustain for long before it is closed by Apple cos’ I feel Apple is tryin hard to make sure ATT’s agreement is meaningful at the least, hence they are tightening the OS. SIM hack would be a better idea cos’ it is not so complicated…

@ Praveen : OTB 1.1.2 are tough to hack (s.w means). Only a sim hack for now, even 1.1.3 🙂

@ Admin: I don’t understand what you mean when you say “activate the iPhone without signing a contract.” Also, what do you mean by choosing a free phone and then buying an iPhone and signing a contract.

@ Confused : Activating without an iPhone contract means jailbreaking and activating with a Cingular/ATT SIMs.

If you are new to ATT and want to move to Cingular/ATT and not sign an iPhone contract, you can first get a free phone (the most expensive one out there), unlcoka nd sell it on eBay/Craigslist and then buy an iPhone and activate it!!

@ Kiran: Thanks, I have graduated to “not so” confused. To summarize, if you have an existing AT&T/Cingular account and you want to use your current Cingular/AT&T GSM sim, then you just need to jailbreak and activate without unlocking and then use the sim from the existing account. If you don’t have an AT&T account, then you can sign up for an AT&T account with a Blackberry or other expensive phone, getting that phone free or with some subsidizing rebate. Then, sell the Blackberry phone on eBay/Craigslist and use that money towards an iPhone (making the net cost of the iPhone less) and then activate the iPhone as usual, either normally through iTunes, or with the jailbreak and activate method (and use the sim that came with the Blackberry). Nifty idea to save some money. From other things I have read, the only downside of jailbreaking and activating and using the sim from the old phone is that you don’t get visual voicemail; the upside is no 2-year iPhone contract.

Hi all, just wanted to let you know that 1.1.2 otb 4.6 can now be unlocked, you have to downgrade to 1.1.1 and jailbreak and then install app from installer 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 unlock patch, then install oketrep and then upgrade to 1.1.2 and jailbreak it and that should do it, and depending on the coutry your from install iworld from installer.
One more thing download audioamp its good for speaker, it fixed my speaker volume.
